I WAS VISITOR #311.......

I hoped on here this morning after checking my emails and such, and decided to go to view my profile...... sho-nuf.... i was visitor #311.... ha, go figure.

Thanks to a friend of mine, for capturing this interesting info he received from a conversation with P-Nut and SA after the Baton Rouge show!

“I asked P-Nut how Bob Rock had been treating him and he said that he was really nice and had been working them. Bob Rock told P-Nut he wasn’t listening to the drums and he need to stop being ahead of the beat doing his own thing and P-Nut was saying that he needed that. And that they were doing something completely different and moving ahead. P-Nut also said he and Nick had been working on the bus on an idea with the bass almost sounding like a percussion instrument.

SA was asked if they were working in Hawaii and he said no, they were actually back in the studio where they made MUSIC…he said that while he wasn’t a fan of Metallica or anything and he had reservations about working with Bob Rock that after working with him it is coming out really dope. He also said it was another level for 311 and seemed really excited as well.
He said they’ve recorded 10 songs and only a few guitars etc. have to be done on them, and they’re going to write and record a few more.

Back in the studio in Oct.

New album and tour by next summer and then another fall tour. He said the songs were really good before Bob Rock but that afterward he brought a whole new level to them.
It’s going to be a concept record with a story and a whole package etc.
The 311 day 08 footage leading up to the show is going to be bundled with it.”

Now Thats Exciting stuff!

Access Atlanta interview with Nick Hexum, plus Chad Sexton speaks with MTV.com

Access Atlanta interviewed Nick last Monday and did a fun Number/Word Association game with him. You can read the Q&A HERE! It asked me to login/sign up, so if it does the same for you (and you don’t want to sign up), so I copied and pasted the text here.

AccessAtlantaPublished on: 07/21/2008
Eighteen years in the music business, and 311’s lead singer Nick Hexumclaims he’s never been asked to play a round of Number Association.(That’s a twist on the old “word association” where you say aword/phrase/whatever with a number and the other person says the first thing that comes to mind.) So days before his rock quintet returned forits annual, multi-genre Unity Tour, we got Hexum to oblige us:

* “Beverly Hills 90210.” “Sideburns.”

* “Reno 911!” “The whale. Remember when they were trying to push thatwhale back into the water [in the movie ‘Reno 911! Miami’]? I didn’tactually see the movie but it was a great trailer. I’ve seen the [TV]show too. It was on in the studio, and I remember the episode when thecops were trying to rap. Talking about ‘Smoking the chronic.’ ‘Smokingthe chronic’ has been an in-studio joke since we saw that.”

* “867-5309.” “Ooooh - the summer swimming pool. … Growing up in thelate ’70s in Omaha, Neb., I will always remember that song, ‘TaintedLove,’ just great memories of girls in bikinis. Summer and the pool.”

* “777-9311.” “Never heard of it.” (It was a hit by the ’80s funk bandthe Time.)

* 50 Cent. “Blowhard.”

* U2. “A role model. Inspiration. An example of how to do it right.”

* OneRepublic. “Good pop. I have a secret pleasure going on right nowwhere I’m really enjoying them and Paramore and just a lot of popularstuff. I like a lot of stuff on the radio right now. I started listeningto the Top 20 station on my satellite, you know, doing a littleresearch; and I got pretty hooked. It may not be hip or cool to saythat, but I don’t care.”

* Andre 3000. “Super-creative. One of my favorite MCs of all time. Hisguest vocals on ‘I Choose You’ by UGK, just that long intro rap overthat old sample - ‘I typed a text to a girl I used to see/Saying that Ichose this cutie pie with whom I wanna be/Wetness all around me, true,but I’m no island/Peninsula maybe, makes no sense I know, crazy’ - that[expletive] is genius!”

* 2Pac. “Missed it. He went over my head. I don’t have any of hisrecords.”

* 311. “A gift to my life. An honor. And a privilege to do this for 18years. It was our dream, but it has become much bigger than that. It’s awhole community of people, and we feel very grateful.

Chad Sexton talks in an interview with mtv.com about how he feels 311 is the next grateful dead here!

the ULTIMATE PRIVATE ISLAND ESCAPE!!! Money Key Island........

Have you ever had the dream of escaping to a deserted island, where seclusion is paramount and everyday life is left behind? I have.... And one day I will be there. I would love to spend it with someone special someday..... I guess I better start saving now...... Cuz I never know when I'll find that someone special.

Melody Key Island is my fantasy place to live.... it is formerly known as Money Key. Nick Hexum the owner of the Island and lead singer for 311 changed the name after purchaseing it. Here is the link to the web page for this, spectacular, wonderful, beautiful island.

yes, the property is for sale......FOR SALE BY OWNER! $4,900,000
The price includes the island, the fully furnished and redecorated luxury home, two boats, a sea walled canal lot on the mainland 1 mile away from the island for parking and launching to the island (which is big enough to build a small home on it) and much more. The island also has the unique feature of being permitted to have short term rentals; it is a right that is grandfathered in and is permanent and will transfer over to the new owners. So, you can run Melody Key as a rental business if you like. Most homes in the Keys are not permitted to be rented out for less than 30 days, so this is an invaluable feature.

Update from my June 10th post!!!!

I sent 311's management team on 311.com an email, reguarding my post on the tenth..... "tribute"

below is the email i received back from them: I removed my email address, cuz I don't think the world needs to know it, and edited the 311 management email address. Now mind you I was disappointed for a slight second, while reading this, but on the other hand, they're sending me something from the actuall concert day!!!!! please read on --->

--- On Tue, 6/17/08,From: 311 management
Subject: Re: TRIBUTE REQUEST
Date: Tuesday, June 17, 2008, 7:38 PM

Hey Rodney, thanks for your email and longtime support of 311. Much appreciated. I was sorry to hear of the passing of solider Matt Maupin. It sounds like the news has shaken up your community and of course is a loss for us all, as he honorably served our country. As for your request, I'm sorry to say that 311 no longer make stage dedications. The band did so for many years, but the requests now are vastly overwhelming. And the band no longer feel it's right to do it for some, and not others. I hope you understand. Thanks again for dropping a line. We wish you all the very best!

Peter Raspler, 311 Management

Rodney, we at the 311 Management team would like to send you an actual stage set-list used at the concert in Cincinnati, for your thoughtfullness and dedication. Thanks Again!

Nice 311 & Snoop tour article

Finally, an article that portrays 311 accurately! =D

One thing that makes this tour pretty cool is that Snoop has sold nearly 4 times as many albums as 311, yet it’s still 311’s Unity tour. I think that says something about 311’s current fan base, and the fact that even though they don’t get much media attention, they are a major force in the music industry!

Tribute............

This past Friday night, after I got home from work, i downed a few beers before getting ready to go out for the night. I was sitting at my computer, checking out 311.com and decided to head on over to the b.b. and leave a tread for the band. More of a request. I requested that the band play the song "tribute" at the July 5th concert @ Cincinnati OH. I ask the band to tribute the song "tribute" to Matt Maupin.

The Military has informed the Maupin family of the body of their missing soldier found in Iraq. The father of soldier Matt Maupin, listed as missing-captured since 2004, says he has informed him that his son's remains have been identified. Sgt. Maupin was a 20-year-old private first class who was captured April 9, 2004, when his fuel convoy was attacked.

This particular death is painful in the Cincinnati area because Matt was one of ours and we have watched and held vigils and prayers with his parents since his capture four years ago. And now we've got the news that we so dreaded.

Matt was not famous. He wasn't a rock star or a celebrity. He was just a good honorable kid serving his country. And he paid the ultimate price and was kept from those that loved him for way too long.

And now, at least, he's home. I really do hope they get to read the b.b., I think P-Nuts parents run the website.... I think? Matt, I tribute, "Tribute" by 311 to you. Thank you!

more this and thats on 311

311 is now on facebook!!!!
Join now!
I just found this blurb on consequenceofsound.net and the writer felt the need to preface a quote from 311 Management with this:
After the hugely disappointing Don’t Tread on Me, 311 has returned to the studio to work on their ninth studio album. In a posting on their message board, the band’s management revealed the following about the currently untitled album:
What exactly qualifies the statement “hugely disappointing?” Was the writer personally disappointed, or did he view it as unsuccessful in a business sense? Because I just found an article that says DTOM debuted at #5 on the Billboard Top 200, and was the #6 single on Modern Rock radio.

~~~~~~~~~~~Nick Hexum & P-Nut~~~~~~~~~~~~
I do have to give that site props though for covering the 311 news pretty extensively…they had a lot of summer festival updates re. 311, and even recognized 311 Day. =D
Nick performs "White Man, in Hammersmith Palais" with Camp Freddy @ the Roxy!
Nick was featured as a guest singer last Thursday with Camp Freddy, a “supergroup” of LA rockers (including Dave Navarro) who just ended a monthlong residency at the Roxy on the Sunset Strip. Billy Idol, Jerry Cantrell, and Juliette Lewis were among other vocalists featured that night. Watch the video of Nick performing “White Man in Hammersmith Palais” with the group HERE!
You can also read a review from the LA Times HERE!
I think Nick did an AMAZING job! He sounds nearly perfect vocally, and his passion for the song really comes through at the end - I’ll admit I got chills! It’s a little weird watching him perform with a different band, but interesting at the same time…it’s fun to watch how his stage presence/style translates in a different environment, and how he interacts with the crowd!
the EVOLUTION of 311
All five members of 311 grew up in the 1970's in Omaha, Nebraska. Nick Hexum, Tim Mahoney and Chad Sexton lived on the west side of town and went to Westside High School together. P-Nut and SA Martinez lived on the south side of town and went to Bryan High School together.
During high school, Nick and Tim played in a rock band together called "The Ed's". Nick was also in the high school concert jazz band with Chad.
At seventeen, Nick graduated early from high school and moved to downtown Los Angeles in pursuit of a music career. When Nick returned to Omaha for Chad and Tim's high school graduation - the three of them jammed and realized they had a special musical chemistry. They soon added a keyboardist named Ward Bones and called themselves "Unity". In late '88, Nick, Chad and Ward moved to LA and made an unsuccessful stab at getting a recording contract.
Disillusioned with the L.A. scene, Chad soon moved back to Omaha and began jamming with P-Nut and a guitarist named Jim Watson. Months later, Chad persuaded Nick to move back to Omaha and join them. They played their first gig opening for Fugazi on June 10th 1990.
In 1991, they parted ways with Jim Watson and added Tim Mahoney as lead guitarist. At that time, SA Martinez began to make guest appearances with the band - and was eventually added as a full member. 311 was complete (Nick, Chad, Tim, P-Nut and SA).
In 1990 & 1991 the band released three independent records on their own label (What Have You Records). The records were called "Dammit," "Hydroponic," and "Unity." With these records and their solid live show, the band quickly established a following in the Midwest and then set out for the West Coast. They rented a small house in Van Nuys, California and all moved in together. These were very lean times for the band. Just before disintegrating into total poverty, they were signed to Capricorn Records.
311's first cd "Music", was released with little fanfare in February of '93 (now Gold). The band hit the road in support of the record and was temporarily sidelined when their touring RV caught on fire and exploded on the shoulder of the highway. The fire destroyed all their equipment, clothes, money and personal possessions. Despite losing everything - the band members escaped the blaze with minor burns and injuries. They decided to persevere and they only canceled one show before returning to the stage with equipment donated by fans and friends who heard about the disaster on the television news.
In July of '94 they released their second cd "Grassroots" (now Gold). By this time they were touring the US non-stop. They moved out of the house in Van Nuys - put their stuff into a storage space and literally just lived on the road. They put all their energy into their live show and steadily developed an incredible grassroots following nationwide.
In July '95 they released their third cd "311" and once again set out on tour. By '96 the shows and the fanbase had grown considerably - and the media which had basically ignored 311 until then, began paying attention. In September of '96 (14 months after the release of the "311" album) the song "Down" hit the airwaves and became an across the board success at radio and MTV. "Down" went to #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and the follow-up single "All Mixed Up" went to #2.
After the success of the "311" album (which is now triple Platinum), 311 released a long form home video called "Enlarged to Show Detail" containing live concert footage, interviews, videos, backstage footage, etc. To make it a unique item, 311 bundled the video with a 5 song EP containing outtakes from the "311" cd. The home video debuted at #1 on Billboards Music Video Sales Chart and is now a Platinum video.
After releasing the home video, 311 went back into the studio to record their fourth cd "Transistor". "Transistor" debuted at #4 on the Billboard Top 200 and is now Platinum.
311's 1997 headlining tour in support of the "Transistor" album drew an average of 10,000 people per night in the US. The band also toured Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand and Japan.
In September of 1998, 311 re-issued some old material on the "Omaha Session" EP. The EP contains 9 songs from the bands 1989-1991 independent releases ("Dammit," "Hydroponic" and "Unity"). The EP is on the band's original "What Have You Records" label and is only available via the 311 website (www.311music.com) and the 311 Mail Order Merch Catalog.
In November of 1998, 311 released 311 Live - a collection of live recordings from the 1997 US Tour. And in October of 1999, 311 released their fifth cd "Soundsystem" which debuted at #9 and toured extensively in the US and Japan.
In 2000, the band purchased a recording studio in North Hollywood. After making some renovations and bringing in their own equipment, they renamed it "The Hive" (which is also the name of their fanclub). The studio was active in the 70's / 80's. Missing Persons and Adam Ant recorded albums there and most recently it was used as a voice over studio for movies, etc.
In 2001, the band released "From Chaos" which debuted at #10 on the Billboard Top 200 Sales Chart. 311 toured extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe in support of "From Chaos". The first single "You Wouldn't Believe" reached #7 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart. The second single "I'll Be Here Awhile" reached #15 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart. The single "Amber" reached #10 on the Billboard Modern Rock Chart and #30 on the Billboard Modern AC Chart. The album is certified Gold.
On July 22, 2003, 311 released their 7th studio album "Evolver" which included the singles, "Creatures (For A While)" and "Beyond the Gray Sky." The band recorded and mixed the album at their own studio, The Hive in North Hollywood, CA. The video for "Creatures (For A While)" was directed by the Malloy Brothers, who also directed 311's video for "Amber". To support the album, 311 embarked on a massive US tour with opening acts such as The Roots, O.A.R., Something Corporate, Medeski Martin & Wood and more.
In 2004, 311 was asked by Adam Sandler to contribute an 80's cover song to his movie "Fifty First Dates." 311 recorded The Cure's "Love Song." 311's version of "Love Song" reached #1 on the Billboard Modern Rock Radio Chart! Making it the band's second #1 hit and their sixth single to crack the Top 10! Nick Hexum also produced four other songs for the movie's soundtrack including songs with Seal, Jason Mraz and Dryden Mitchell from Alien Ant Farm.
On 3-11-04, 311 fans once again invaded the city of New Orleans for a special 3-11 Day Concert. 311 performed a legendary 5 hour set at UNO Lakefront Arena in front of a sold-out crowd of 311's biggest fans. The band played 68 songs including all their classic hits plus rarities and covers (Led Zeppelin's "D'yer Maker", The Clash's "White Man in Hammersmith Palais", The Cure's "Love Song"). The entire concert was filmed and recorded and ultimately released (Oct 26, 2004) as a special 2-DVD set"3-11 Day Live in New Orleans." The DVD includes 64 songs plus a behind the scenes look at the band and their fans. The DVD is now certified Platinum.
On June 8, 2004, 311 released "Greatest Hits (1993-2003)", a definitive collection of 311's top radio singles plus two brand new songs "How Do You Feel" and "First Straw." The album debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart, marking the fourth time that a 311 album has reached the Top 10!
In late 2004, 311 returned to The Hive Studio to work on studio album #8, with producer Ron Saint Germain (Bad Brains, Soundgarden, Tool). Saint also produced the "311", "From Chaos" and "Evolver" albums. The new album "Don't Tread On Me" was released on August 16, 2005. The album debuted #9 on Billboard's Top 200 chart. The first single "Don't Tread On Me" went to #1 at Modern Rock radio. In the meantime, 311 embarked on a 40 date summer amphitheatre tour. And in further support of the album, the band continued on with 2005 Fall and Winter Tours.
In 2006, 311 returned to the road with a Spring Tour, highlighted by a fantastic 3-11 Day show in Memphis, playing 66 songs across 5 hours! The band continued on with a first time to play Jamaica, a return to Hawaii and a return to Japan to play the PunkSpring Festival shows. In Summer, 311 headlined another major amphitheatre tour across the US, this time bringing out support from the lengendary Wailers. The tour was met with great success from coast to coast.
In 2007, 311 fired up the engines once again with another major U.S. Summer Tour of amphitheatres, bringing along support from Matisyahu and The English Beat. The 50 show tour drew crowds of 14,000+ in Atlanta, Boston, DC, New Jersey & Los Angeles - and 10,000+ in St. Louis, West Palm, Charlotte, Virginia Beach, Denver, etc. 311's mass following was growing larger than ever!
In 2008, 311 ventured on a Spring Tour, highlighted by an epic 3-11 Day show in New Orleans; the show was sold out (14,000 tickets) at New Orleans Arena, selling tickets to fans across all 50 states and 12 other countries! 311 put on a legendary performance of 63 songs with fans on their feet and cheering for more after 5 hours straight!
In May of 2008, 311 entered the studio with esteemed producer, Bob Rock (Metallica, Bon Jovi, The Cult, etc) to begin work on the band's ninth studio album (planned for release in late Spring 2009). The band will do the recording in two parts; first part before the summer tour, and the second part after the summer tour.
That's right, in summer 2008, 311 will again take it's Unity Tour coast to coast. This summer tour should be the biggest and best one yet…as Snoop Dogg is confirmed to join 311 for 28 shows coast to coast. This will definitely be the party of the summer!
96.5fm in cincy - and 311 & snoop concert
96.5 pure rock in cincy is having a deal thru the station (thanks to me) for the 311 - snoop dogg summer Unity tour. listen in to win by calling in or.... my idea call in and tell your story of "SNOOPin' around to win 311 tix"
ofcourse my chance of winning by calling in, is slim. with all the fans of either snoop or 311. so i emailed my "SNOOPin around story" to the collective peoples involved with this. basically back to whom i orginally emailed my idea, because the tix are presale only untill this saturday. well heres my snooping around story....... tell me if you think this would have one!!!!!!
